Welcome to float therapy, where gravity takes a break, stress drifts away, and your mind finally gets the peace and quiet it deserves. Below, we’ve answered your most common (and some unexpected) questions with a mix of science, humor, and genuine care—because you deserve to float stress-free
Float therapy, also called sensory deprivation therapy, is a deep relaxation experience where you float effortlessly in a tank filled with warm water and 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt. No effort, no distractions—just you, weightless, like a human cloud on vacation.
A float room is basically the VIP suite for floating – a spacious, open version of a traditional float tank. It’s filled with warm water and Epsom salt, just like a tank, but has more space and a walk-in design, making it a great option for those who prefer a less enclosed experience. Think of it as a private, zero-gravity spa for your body and mind.
Most floats last 90 minutes – long enough for your mind and body to fully relax, but not so long that you start questioning reality.
Floating helps with stress relief, muscle recovery, pain management, sleep improvement, mental clarity, and relaxation. It can also boost creativity, reduce anxiety, and give your brain the reset it didn’t know it needed. Think of it as a vacation for your mind, body, and soul—minus the overpriced airport snacks.
Epsom salt (aka magnesium sulfate) is the MVP of floating. Not only does it make the water denser than the Dead Sea (so you float effortlessly), but magnesium is also amazing for muscle relaxation, stress relief, and even improving sleep. Plus, it leaves your skin feeling soft, not pruney – so really, it’s doing all the work while you just lie there.
Floating is like meditation on autopilot. In a float tank, your body and brain naturally enter a deeply relaxed state, similar to what experienced meditators achieve after years of practice. The difference? No effort required. No trying to “clear your mind” or “focus on your breath”—the tank does the work for you. It’s like getting a cheat code for deep relaxation and mental clarity.
Yes! Studies show that floating lowers cortisol (the stress hormone), reduces anxiety, improves sleep, relieves chronic pain, and boosts creativity. Scientists have been studying sensory deprivation for decades, and the benefits are backed by real research – not just ‘wellness hype’.
Absolutely. Floating removes pressure from your joints and muscles, making it a game-changer for pain relief—especially for people with conditions like fibromyalgia, arthritis, or injuries. It also lowers stress hormones and increases feel-good neurotransmitters like dopamine and endorphins, helping to ease anxiety and boost your mood. Basically, it’s a mini-vacation for your nervous system.
The high salt concentration in the water keeps you floating effortlessly, removing pressure from your muscles and joints. With no sound, no light, and no gravity pulling you down, your nervous system gets to fully relax, reset, and recharge—basically, it’s meditation, a massage, and a power nap all rolled into one.
Float therapy has been around since the 1950s, when neuroscientist Dr. John C. Lilly developed the first sensory deprivation tank to study consciousness and brain activity in a stimulus-free environment. While his early research was more on the experimental side (think deep dives into human cognition), over the decades, floating evolved into a widely recognized wellness practice. By the 1970s and 80s, commercial float tanks started appearing in wellness centers, and today, float therapy is backed by scientific research showing its benefits for stress reduction, pain relief, mental clarity, and overall relaxation. So while the concept isn’t new, modern float therapy has come a long way—now offering spa-like environments instead of science lab experiments!
Floating requires zero prep work, but a few smart choices can make your experience even better. Avoid caffeine for a few hours beforehand (unless you want to float while feeling like a hummingbird), eat a light meal (no one wants a growling stomach mid-float), and try to arrive with a relaxed mindset. Also, if you’ve shaved or waxed recently, you might want to skip floating for a day – saltwater on freshly shaved skin = not fun.
Honestly? Nothing but yourself! We provide towels, earplugs, shampoo, and anything else you’ll need. Most people float naked (yep, really), but if that feels weird, a swimsuit is totally fine – just know that tight straps and elastic can be a tiny distraction in the sensory-free environment.
Yes, but keep it light and simple. A small snack or meal is fine, but a huge burger and fries beforehand? Not the best idea—digestion noises can be surprisingly loud when there’s nothing else to focus on! The goal is comfortably full, not uncomfortably stuffed.
Nope! We provide towels, earplugs, shampoo, and even that blissful post-float feeling. Just bring yourself and a willingness to let go.
You’ll step into the warm, private float tank, lie back, and instantly float like a superstar in zero gravity. The salt does all the work – you just relax, breathe, and enjoy. Some people meditate, some nap, and some just enjoy the rare experience of absolute peace and quiet.
Most people float naked—and before you panic, know that the tank is completely private. Going without a swimsuit enhances the sensory deprivation experience since fabric touching your skin can be distracting. But if you’d feel more comfortable in a swimsuit, that’s totally fine too—floating is about relaxation, so do what works best for you!
Completely private! Your float suite is your own personal relaxation space with a private shower and float room. Once inside, you control everything – the lighting, the music, and whether the door is open or closed. No one will disturb you, so you can fully relax, unwind, and let go of the outside world.
Yes! Many people love floating in silence, but if music helps you relax, you can choose from soothing sounds or music we offer. Whether you prefer gentle ocean waves or meditation music, the experience is yours to customize. We also offer an auxiliary plug to connect your own device if you wish, remember to place your phone in airplane mode during your session.
Absolutely! The water is kept at skin-temperature (~93.5°F) so that after a while, you can’t tell where your body ends and the water begins. This helps create the weightless, zero-gravity effect that makes floating so deeply relaxing. No hot tubs, no cold plunge – just perfectly balanced water for total comfort.
Of course! You are always in control. If at any point you feel uncomfortable, you can open the tank, step out, or adjust the lights and sound to make it more relaxing. Most people find that once they settle in, their worries melt away, but if you need to step out early, that’s totally okay. Your float, your rules!
Absolutely not. This is your one chance to fully unplug – take it! Your notifications will still be there when you emerge fully refreshed and unbothered.
Salt Water + Phone = BAD DAY
Yes! A quick rinse helps wash off the salt, but don’t worry – it’s part of the experience. Plus, your skin will feel soft and silky from the Epsom salt. Your Float Suite will have a private shower, shampoo, body wash, conditioner and towels for your to use. You will have approximately 10 minutes after your float to exit the room. We do also have a pamper room that has a blow dryer, ear cleaners and a mirror available so you can get ready to go back to work or out to enjoy the rest of your day.
Yes! But be warned – you might be way too relaxed to care about emails. Many people feel calm, refreshed, and mentally clear after floating, making it a great mid-day reset before heading back to work. If you have a high-energy or fast-paced job, just give yourself a few minutes to reacclimate to the real world before diving back in.
It depends on your goals! For stress relief and general relaxation, once a month is great. If you’re using floating for pain management, recovery, or deep mental clarity, once a week or more can be incredibly beneficial. Just like working out or meditating, the more consistently you float, the better the results!

Absolutely! Most people feel deeply relaxed, mentally refreshed, and physically lighter – kind of like you just had the best nap of your life, minus the grogginess. Some people feel energized and focused, while others feel so zen they just want to curl up and take it easy for the rest of the day. Either way, expect to feel amazing.
It’s rare, but occasionally people feel a little lightheaded after floating, especially if they stood up too quickly or didn’t hydrate enough beforehand. If this happens, just sit down, take a few deep breaths, and sip some water – it usually passes in a minute or two. Your body just went through a deep relaxation state, so give yourself a moment to adjust before jumping back into the hustle. We do have a room available for you to relax in if needed after your float.
Yes! Floating is completely natural, non-invasive, and safe for most people. The water is filtered and sanitized between every session, and the high salt concentration naturally prevents bacteria from growing. Plus, since the salt keeps you effortlessly buoyant, there’s no risk of drowning—even if you fall asleep!
Yes! Many expecting mothers love floating because it relieves pressure on joints, eases back pain, and helps with swelling. The weightless environment gives your body a break, making it one of the most relaxing experiences during pregnancy. That said, we always recommend checking with your doctor first, especially if you’re in your first trimester.
Absolutely! If you’re comfortable in a pool or bath during your period, you’ll be fine floating. Just wear a new clean tampon and be sure to change it soon after your float. The experience is still just as relaxing and beneficial – no reason to miss out on your float!
It depends! If your hair dye still bleeds when wet, you’ll need to wait until the color sets (usually 14 days) to avoid staining the tank. (There are big fees if this happens) Fresh tattoos and piercings should be fully healed before floating—saltwater + an open wound = ouch. (normally 4-6 weeks)
Floating is safe for most people, but it’s not recommended if you have:
– Unhealed wounds, recent surgeries, or fresh tattoos/piercings (the salt will sting—trust us, it’s not fun).
– Severe claustrophobia that may cause distress in an enclosed space.
– An active skin condition or infection that could be irritated by the saltwater.
– A contagious illness (cold, flu, or skin infections)—because sharing is not caring in this case.
If you have any medical conditions you’re unsure about, check with your doctor first – your safety and comfort are our top priorities!
Nope! Drowning in a float tank is pretty much impossible. The 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt make the water so dense that your body stays effortlessly afloat – even if you fully relax or fall asleep. If anything, you might wake up feeling like you just had the best nap of your life! Don’t worry – your body naturally keeps you balanced, so just lie back and enjoy.
Floating can help with stress, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, migraines, athletic recovery, fibromyalgia, PTSD, and insomnia. If you feel tense, sore, or mentally overloaded, floating can help bring things back into balance.
We take cleanliness very seriously – because no one wants to float in anything less than crystal-clear water. After every session, the entire tank’s water is fully filtered multiple times through a high-tech filtration system with UV light and micron filters that remove bacteria, debris, and anything else that doesn’t belong. Plus, the high concentration of Epsom salt naturally prevents bacteria from growing, making the tank one of the cleanest environments you’ll ever experience!
Not entirely, and that’s actually a good thing! The water is continuously filtered and sanitized between every single session using advanced filtration, ozone, and UV purification. Unlike a bathtub (where water just sits there), float tank water is constantly maintained at a pristine level. It’s cleaner than most swimming pools, and you’ll always step into perfectly fresh, purified water.
We use high quality Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) – aka the good stuff. It’s 100% pure, free from additives, and packed with magnesium, which helps relax muscles, reduce stress, and leave your skin feeling soft and refreshed. No table salt, no ocean salt – just high-quality, body-loving minerals.
Nope! Floating won’t dry you out or dehydrate you. Even though you’re surrounded by saltwater, your skin actually absorbs hydrating and soothing magnesium, leaving it feeling soft, not pruney. However, like any form of relaxation therapy, it’s always a good idea to drink some water after your float to stay refreshed!
Totally understandable! But here’s the good news—floating actually helps many people with claustrophobia because once you settle in, it feels more like floating in an open space than being “trapped” in a tank. You’re always in control: you can leave the tank open, adjust the lights, or step out at any time.
No worries! The float tank does all the work for you. Thanks to the 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt, the water is denser than the Dead Sea – so even if you sink like a rock in a regular pool, you’ll float effortlessly here. No swimming skills required!
We totally get the appeal of a float date. We are excited to have a Deluxe float room that can accommodate two people to float together. Please remember, the goal is to remove distractions – including other people sometimes – so you can fully relax and reset. Our single float tank only allows one person at a time.
Probably not – but your brain might get creative. Some people experience vivid thoughts, dream-like imagery, or a deep meditative state because the brain isn’t busy processing external stimuli. But full-blown hallucinations? Unlikely, unless you’ve been floating for hours and haven’t slept in days. What you will experience is a deep state of calm, mental clarity, and total relaxation.
Absolutely! The tanks are well-ventilated, and fresh air is constantly circulating—so you’ll always have plenty of oxygen. The space inside is bigger than most people expect, so no need to worry about feeling stuffy or running out of air. Breathe easy and relax!
Nope! Floating has been around since the 1950s, and scientific research continues to prove its benefits for stress reduction, pain relief, athletic recovery, and mental well-being. What started as a neuroscience experiment has now become a widely respected wellness practice used by athletes, entrepreneurs, and anyone looking to improve their physical and mental health. Unlike fad diets and questionable beauty trends, floating is here to stay.
Yes – floating is typically for ages 13 and up. If you’re under 18, you’ll need a parent or guardian’s permission and supervision. We allow a guardian to sit in the room at no cost if they are not floating. That said, kids can definitely benefit from floating, especially for stress relief, focus, and relaxation – so if you’re unsure, just ask us!
Life happens – we get it! We just ask that you give us at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to reschedule. Please understand that we reserve the room, time and space just for you. Last-minute cancellations or no-shows will forfeit what they paid for their session. All booking sales are final and we do not offer any refunds. With that said, if something unexpected comes up, just reach out – we’re happy to work with you! We are human, we are parents, we are business owners and we are spouses.
Yes! Floating is a solo experience, but you can definitely book sessions at the same time and relax together in separate rooms. We do have have our deluxe float room, so if you’re interested in floating side-by-side that is also a possibility! Either way, it’s a great way to introduce a friend to the magic of floating.
Our float rooms are designed to be spacious and easy to enter. However, they do not have specific ADA accommodations at this time. If you have mobility concerns, please contact us in advance. If you have a care taker we do offer them to accommodate you at no charge. Employees of Salt Spa Wellness are not able to accommodate or help someone in and out of a float room.
